1 DAVIDSON, Gladys; pictured by M. M. Rudge and D. E. Braham ALL ABOUT THE FLYING PIG ... c.1918 children's book.
London: Dean & Co., 160a Fleet St., E.C., undated, 1918 or earlier.
Small, hard-covered children's book about a Snorter, the pig who wanted to fly, managed to do it, and ended up regretting it. A poor copy, but rare, with lovely illustrations. Patterned cream paper boards with two coloured illustrations pasted into printed borders on front cover, which is detached. Spine missing. Contents intact and in reasonable condition with a few dog-eared pages and some children's pencil writing, including helpful inscription "Rene Smith Christmas 1918 from Alison xxxxxxxx". 8 beautiful colour illustrations plus numerous small line drawings in the text. Dedicated by the author "to the nicest child in the whole world", but we are not told who that was. Not you, because you weren't born. 5.4" x 4.25", 48pp. Weight 200g.

2 M. A. B. (Author of "Tales of Crowbridge Workhouse" ... frontispiece by Kate Greenaway TAKING TALES : HELPFUL SAM ... Rare Victorian children's book
London: Griffith & Farran (successors to Newbery & Harris), corner of St. Paul's Churchyard; also New York: E. P. Dutton & Co., undated but frontispiece dated 1881
Delightful Victorian children's book, red cloth-covered card, 64pp, 12mo, with nice Victorian decoration and lettering in black, and small stuck-on coloured illustration of two young ladies listening in rapture to a lute player on a park bench in front of an impressive building with a dome like St. Paul's Cathedral (which it might well be). Nice frontispiece engraving signed "Greenaway 81", doubtless Kate Greenaway, entitled "Sam and Jenny", showing a tired and dispirited-looking young couple hand in hand on a beach. The book is of the moral-religious type popular with parents at that time. Condition G except that the bulk of the book has become detached from the covers/spine (which are still in one piece). An easy matter to glue it back in, but we will leave it to you. Nice presentation bookplate: "Miss L. D. Gillie's School, 3 Parkside Terrace, Edinburgh: awarded to Joseph M. Leighton for English (3rd Prize). Session 1884-5. (signed) L.D.G." Rare: no other example found on internet at time of listing. Packed weight 200g.
